Cochin is now known as Kochi (original name of Cochin) is the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala located on the south-west coast of India. Cochin is known as “the Queen of the Arabian Sea” and also referred to as the Gateway of Kerala..The name Kochi is derived from Koch Azhi, meaning 'small lagoon'. Chinese Fishing Nets :
The entrance to the Cochin harbor is spotted by the Chinese Fishing Nets has been brought from by traders of Kubalai Khan’s Court. These are large nets which hang from bamboo or teak posts are about 10 meters in height and each is operated by a team consisting of six fishermen. They are used at high tide and are still used by local fishermen in fort Cochin to catch fish attracted by the lights hanging above the nets.
Cherai Beach :
A lovely beach bordering Vypeen Island is ideal for swimming. Dolphins are infrequently seen here. A typical Kerala village with paddy fields and coconut groves nearby are the attraction of this beach. It is a popular tourist destination among locals and foreigners.

Church of Saint Francis, Cochin :
Located two kilometers from Fort cochin, built in 1510 AD by five Portuguese priests who arrived with Albuquerque and was dedicated to saint Anonio. This church, said to be the oldest among the churchs build by Europeans in India. It was restored in 1779 by the protestence Dutch, converted to an Anglican Church by the British in 1795. Vasco da Gama's remains were buried here in 1524 and after 14 years his mortal remains were taken to Lisbon, Portugal but his tombstone are still here.
Santa Cruz BasilicaIs :
The large and impressive monumental Catholic Church close to St. Francis Church was also built by the Portuguese in 1558. It has beautiful paintings on the ceiling and striking pale colored interior.
Jewish Synagogue :
The oldest synagogue in Mattancherry was built in the year 1568s and was partially destroyed in the war of 1662 and was rebuilt by the Dutch. It is open for two hours in the morning (10 am-12 noon) and a further two in the afternoon (3pm-5pm) each day and closed on Saturday and Jewish holidays. The synagogue is famous for its amazing 18th century hand painted willow pattern floor tiles imported from China. There are abundant wonderful features to be viewed, including scrolls from the Old Testament and ornamental Belgian lamps.
The Hill Palace Museum :
Tripunithura, was the official residence of Cochin Royal Family. It is 12 kims away from Eranakulam on Eranakulam – Chottanikkara route. It was built in 1865 AD. The Palace also encompasses a Deer Park and horse riding facilities. A complete ethno-archaeological museum and Kerala's first heritage museum are the main attractions. Oil paintings, 19th century paintings, Murals, sculpture in stone and plaster of Paris, manuscripts, inscriptions and coins belonging to the Cochin royal family are displayed here. It opens from 10 am – 5 pm except Monday and national holidays.
Chottanikkara Temple :
Chttanikkara Bhagavathi Temple is one of the famoustemple in kerala. The Deity at Chottanikkara is revered here in three forms; she is Saraswathi (goddess of learning) in the morning, Bhagavathi (divine mother) at noon and Durga (fierce and destructive ) in the evening.

Guruvayur Temple :
Guruvayur is the most famous temple in Kerala. it is at a distance of 29 kms away from Thrissur Town. The temple's deity is Lord Krishna known as 'Guruvayurappan' in the standing posture with four hands (Chaturbahu) that carry the Sankhu (conch), the Sugarcane chakram (a serrated disk), the lotus and the mace and the idol is said to have been worshipped by Lord Brahma himself at Dwaraka. The idol of the deity is made of a rare stone known as Patala Anjanam.
The Lord is worshipped in his many manifestations, the favorite with devotees being the 'Sankalpa' of the Lord as 'Unnikrishnan' (Infant Krishna). Non-Hindus are prohibited inside the premises of the temple.
According to legend, came into existence when an idol of Lord Krishna was saved by the Guru of the Gods with the help of Vayu, the God of wind, and brought to Kerala. The two gave their names to Guruvayur.

Ashtami Rohini :
In the month of Chingam (July-Aug), under the Rohini Nakshatra, on the 8th day of the waning moon of Sravana is the day of Lord Krishna's birth i.e. Janmashtami.
A very special day in all Sree Krishna temples, Guruvayur Devaswom itself offer a niramalya (full of garlands and lamps), devotees flock in with cakes of rice paste and jaggery considered the most favorite food of the Lord on that day.
Aarattu :
Lord's Thidambu is taken to the Rudratheertha (temple pond) for Aarattu, amidst the chanting of holy mantras.
Ekadasi :
The most important festival during the Mandalam period, lasting for a month. It was on the Guruvayur Ekadasi day that Lord Krishna revealed the Bhagwad Gita to Arjun.
Chembai Sangeetholsavam :
It is a Carnatic music festival held for 11 days to pay tribute to Sri Chembai Vaidyanadha Bhagavathar, as part of the Ekhadasi celebrations.
Ulsavam :
This festival is conducted in the month of Kumbha, i.e., in February or March and lasts for 10 days. The hoisting of the temple flag atop the flagstaff (Dwajastambham) about 70 feet high marks the beginning of the festival. On the 1st day, an elephant race also is held for this festival.
The next 6 days, devotees can witness elephant processions in the morning, afternoon and night. In the morning, there is the Sribhuta Bali (offering of oblation at various altars). Besides this there are also various cultural programs. On the 8th day, during 'Utsavabali' (from 10 am to 4 pm) oblations are offered to the Lord's lieutenants. A sumptuous feast then awaits the devotees. Pallivetta or the hunting expedition of the Lord takes place on the 9th day. This hunt is symbolic of the destruction of Kama (desire), Krodha (anger) and other such evils that plague us in our life.
After that the Lord's idol is taken to the Rudratheertha (temple pond) for Aarattu, amidst the chanting of mantras. Thousands of devotees a take the dip, chanting the Lord's name to wash off their sins. Then noon Pooja (which takes place at night only on this day) is held at the Bhagavati shrine. Finally, the Lord returns to the sanctum after 11 circumambulations. The temple flag is then lowered indicating the end of the festival.
